Purpose of the role

ZSL is seeking a dedicated and passionate Zoo Keeper to join the Primate Section at Whipsnade Zoo. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a dynamic, forward-thinking team committed to delivering the highest standards of animal welfare and husbandry.

Our approach to primate care is continually evolving, reflecting the latest developments in enrichment, management, and behavioural understanding. We're looking for someone with hands-on experience working with Category 1 animals, including great apes, who can contribute their skills and enthusiasm to our progressive team.

Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset are essential, as you'll be working closely with colleagues to meet shared goals and ensure the best outcomes for the animals in our care.

Key responsibilities:
  • Animal Care & Feeding: Prepare and deliver approved diets in line with established feeding procedures to meet species-specific nutritional needs.
  • Exhibit & Equipment Maintenance: Maintain exceptional hygiene standards by cleaning and upkeeping animal exhibits, equipment, and workspaces.
  • Husbandry & Welfare Development: Support the development of best-practice husbandry by helping to design enriching, innovative, and visually engaging enclosures that promote natural behaviours.
  • Animal Observation & Reporting: Monitor animal behaviour, health, and security daily, reporting any concerns promptly to Lead Keepers or Section Management.
  • Training & Enrichment: Assist in the creation and implementation of enrichment and training programmes to support physical and psychological well-being.
  • Veterinary Support: Support the Veterinary Team by administering treatments as directed, ensuring high standards of animal health care.
  • Visitor Engagement: Enhance the guest experience by delivering informative talks, demonstrations, and positive interactions that connect visitors to ZSL’s mission.
  • Conservation & Research Support: Collaborate with the curatorial team to contribute to conservation and research efforts across ZSL programmes.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and up-to-date records, including daily logs, risk assessments, and data entry into ZIMS and other relevant systems.
  • Equality, Diversity & Inclusion: Promote and uphold ZSL’s commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion in all areas of work and team engagement.

About You

  • Successful completion of the Zookeeper and Aquarist Apprenticeship Programme or a Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals (DMZAA), or an equivalent recognised qualification.
  • Hands-on experience working with animals in a zoo or aquarium environment, ideally with a focus on exotic species management
  • A proactive and initiative-driven approach, with the ability to identify and complete tasks that support the smooth running of the section.
  • A sustainability mindset, consistently looking for ways to improve productivity and efficiency in daily operations.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions, as well as indoors in environments with high temperatures, due to habitat requirements.
  • Physically fit and capable of meeting the demands of the role, including standing, walking, lifting, carrying, reaching, pushing, and pulling for extended periods.
  • Strong alignment with ZSL’s values, promoting a culture that is collaborative, inclusive, ethical, inspiring, impactful, and innovative.
  • Commitment to safeguarding, and championing equality, diversity and inclusion across all areas of work.
  • Flexibility to work 37.5 hours per week on a rota basis, including weekends and bank holidays, as part of a 7-day operational team.
  • For roles based at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, a full manual UK driving licence is essential due to the scale and layout of the site.

This role is subject to standard pre-employment checks, including the candidate's right to work in the UK.
